Does Penal Substitution require that everyone be saved? After all, if Jesus paid for the sins of everyone, that means that everyone’s sins are paid for and universalism is true.
Or, on the other hand, could it be that Jesus did not actually pay for everyone’s sins and Limited Atonement is true?
The answer is actually very simple–neither universalism nor limited atonement are true. Rather, the death of Jesus paid for all sin, but the payment is not applied to one’s account until he receives it by faith.
In other words, it is available to all, but applied only to those who believe.
