Penal Substitution=Cosmic Child Abuse?

Is God a bloodthirsty sadist?
Is God guilty of cosmic child abuse?

Apparently He is, if Penal Substitution is true (at least according to some people). The charge is that God lashes out in unbridled anger over sin, and poor Jesus happened to be the unfortunate soul that was closest. God then unleashed His anger on Jesus, who didn’t really want to take part in the whole scheme.

Is that, however, a correct characterization of Penal Substitution? Not at all.

In this video, we will look at two refutations of Penal Substitution:

  1. God is a bloodthirsty sadist
  2. God is guilty of cosmic child abuse

Here are some refutations of the refutation:

  1. God punishes sin not because He is angry, but because He is just.
  2. God made the payment Himself
  3. Jesus was a willing partner
  4. This is a misunderstanding of the Trinity
