Penal Substitution, although under attack, stands at the heart of the atonement. Without it, all theology crumbles.

- It elevates the character of God
God cannot set aside His justice or His mercy–He must have both all the time. Penal Substitution resolves this conflict in that He required payment, but we did not have to pay it–He did it Himself.
