There is an attack today on the idea of Penal Substitutionary Atonement, especially with the growth of so-called Progressive Christianity.
Penal Substitionary Atonement is the idea that Jesus took on Himself the punishment that we deserve, allowing us to be reconciled to God. Isaiah 53 refers to Jesus, as the New Testament writers observed. See, for example, Matthew 8:16-17, Luke 22:35-37, John 12:37-41, Acts 8:30-35, and I Peter 2:21-25.
If we look at the personal pronouns through Isaiah 53, it is obvious that this “Suffering Servant,” or Jesus, died in our place, taking our punishment on Himself.
