It’s about time!
Those may be the words we exclaim at the first sight of the sun after a long, dreary winter. We finally have hope that the beautiful weather we have been anticipating just might once again emerge from hibernation.
We look forward to many other things also: a long-awaited vacation, the Christmas holidays, a fun-filled weekend, or a hot date with a hot wife. In fact, sometimes the best part of something is the anticipation of it.
While we may anticipate different things, there is one event that people have always looked forward to: the destruction of evil.
Whenever we hear about a string of shootings in Chicago, locals demand, “Why don’t the police do something about it?” Or when folks perceive that injustice has been served in the court system, they often riot to call attention to it. On and on it goes…the search for how to finally rid ourselves of evil.
Sometimes we think we’re making some progress, but then we find we are actually losing ground. When is this all going to end?
Today we get the answer. In John’s vision, seven angels were given trumpets, and when each one blew his trumpet, something spectacular occurred.
At long last, we hear the seventh trumpet blast and we get what we have been waiting for. The twenty-four elders in the throne room of heaven immediately fall prostrate before God, unabashedly proclaiming why God is worthy of worship. He is eternal. He is powerful. He will distribute rewards. He will judge and destroy people.
Wait…what? God will judge and destroy people? How is that good?
It’s good because evil is the result of rebellion. As long as man is allowed to continue in rebellion, evil will permeate the earth. Murder will be rampant, battles will be fought, and injustice will be served.
However, it’s going to come to an end. Before God establishes His eternal kingdom, He will punish wickedness and eliminate it from the earth. That is what we have anticipated since Adam and Eve decided to rebel against God. Evil will eventually be destroyed.
And we join with all the saints throughout the ages and exclaim, “It’s about time!”
